Howell man charged with possessing $48,000 in high-grade marijuana

    by Nyier Abdou/The Star-Ledger
    Friday July 25, 2008, 1:27 PM

A Howell man was arrested at the drug at the Red Bull Inn on Route 22 in Bridgewater Thursday and charged with possessing $48,000 worth of high-grade marijuana, authorities said.

Michael Klein, 33, is charged with second-degree drug possession with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia, a disorderly persons offense, police said.

Working on a tip, members of the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office organized crime and narcotics task force staked out the motel Thursday evening and waited for Klein, who was expected to be carrying a large amount of marijuana, police said. When Klein pulled into the motel, officers approached him and searched his car with the help of K-9 dogs.

Police recovered seven bags of marijuana from the car, then searched Klein's Howell home, where they seized another pound of marijuana, along with scales and plastic bags typically used for packaging the drug for sale, police said.

Klein was taken to Somerset County Jail, police said.

Sounds like this guy was a heavy toker.

    Posted by MaryJane715 on 07/25/08 at 2:02PM

This is such a joke, maybe the government would like it better if he sat home and collected welfare like every other piece of garbage. Instead he is out selling Marijuana to everyday working class people who are responsible individuals who get up everyday go to work pay taxes and take care of their families. Heaven forbid they were to smoke a joint every now and then, I guess they should be going down to their local bar to get hammered and then drive home drunk and hit one of your children on their way, that makes much more sense. These people seriously need a wake up call. One more way the Government can make money.

    Posted by BIGSIS27 on 07/25/08 at 2:25PM

if the government can figure out a way as to how to tax marijuana, like they do everything else, then it probably would be legallized.

Posted by leadnfollow on 07/25/08 at 2:32PM

Taxing isn't the issue. It would be the same concept as everything else. Put it in the store, throw a price on it and assess the state tax.

When the drinking age was 18, seniors in high school were able to buy booze. Still even back then it was easier to get pot than booze for teenagers, because no one checked for ID when buying a joint.

When the drinking age moved to 21, getting beer became a real pain in the but, but pot use soared.

Legalizing pot would accomplish many things. Three that come immediately to mind are.

It would be harder for kids to get it, because stores selling it would be more likely to check ID than the dealer with the shoe box in his locker.

Tax on this 6-10 Billion dollar a year crop would provide so much money, even our NJ politicians could not waste it all. (Though I have no doubt they will try.)

It would free up hundreds of thousands of jail cells, so we could keep murderers, rapists and violent criminals in jail longer.

Posted by McBush on 07/25/08 at 2:47PM

There are murderers and rapists out there. Don't the cops have anything better to do with their time?

    Posted by hakkadoo77 on 07/25/08 at 2:50PM

Chalk one up for the good guys. Now I say they deport this man along with all you other lawbreaking druggies. You are the people that are ruining this country!

Posted by lilmoo on 07/25/08 at 2:52PM

NJ seems to follow California in everything else, why not MJ laws. I know it's not really California state law but many areas of California treat MJ as a lowest priority police matter, meaning if you are responsible and don't walk around smoking in public you likely will not have any problem.

In Alaska it is still perfectly legal to have and smoke MJ in your home because those courts have ruled that your privacy in your home is more important then what you ingest while in it. Politicans have been fighting like badgers to make it illegal there, but the courts have held so far.

It really is crazy that the USA makes millions upon millions of its own citizens criminal felons because of what they decide to put into their body under their own freewill. If someone does something illegal while they are high then arrest them. If they steal to buy drugs then arrest them but why on Earth we are turning millions of our fellow Americans into criminals for non-violent consumption is beyond me.

Yet American Pharma companies sell Billions of mind altering feel good pills each year, mostly to the middle to upper class and that is perfectly ok. However be a wroking class or lower class shelp and decide to smoke a harmless plant and you might be caged for years.

We have now had two drug using Presidents in a row and we are sure to get a third, when will one of these people step out of their politicans shoes and do the right thing and end this destructive drug war and the black markets have grown out of it.

Posted by ITChic on 07/25/08 at 2:54PM

How do I get some of that?

    Posted by hakkadoo77 on 07/25/08 at 2:55PM

Last time I checked selling drugs is illegal so the cops were doing there jobs and a great job they did too. You don't know if they guys was selling to teenagers or kids, and you don't know where he was getting the drugs from either. The drug trade supports terrorism and is illegal. You should all be ashamed of yourself. the next step is to deport this peice of crap back to where he came from.

    Posted by irreverent88 on 07/25/08 at 3:00PM

His name is Michael Klein...I doubt there will be any deporting.

    Posted by hakkadoo77 on 07/25/08 at 3:11PM

Why not? We are always so quick to ask that the deport people whose names are spanish. Shouldn't it be across the board. We are all immigrants in this country right? Send everyone back!

Posted by lilmoo on 07/25/08 at 3:25PM

Hakkadoo, you say the drug trade supports terrorism and it also is the reason street gangs blossomed.

What you don't seem to understand though is that if drugs were NOT illegal then they could NOT support terrorism or American street gangs!

Do you understand this? The only reason black markets exist in the drug trade is because they are illegal. Not all that long ago one could buy cocaine for the same price as a can of soda at your local candy store.

If cocaine still cost $1 a gram then there would be no such thing as internation drug cartels because there would not be any profit in it.

Posted by scubadudenj on 07/25/08 at 3:29PM

hakkadoo77 -president Bush did more to support terrorism than anyone, when he gave them a training ground in Iraq and stopped rigorously pursuing them in Afghanistan.

Posted by lilmoo on 07/25/08 at 3:33PM

To be more to the point.

End the drug war and make drugs legal. Allow use with a doctors authorization and do not use law enforcemnt to engage the black markets, let them die on their own.

Within 4 years our crime rate would drop by at least 30% and the murder rate would drop in half.

Terrorists and street gangs would no longer be able to make money off drugs in the US at least.

You say one of the problems with drugs is it funds terror? Well let's stop it then, end the drug war and allow the black markets to die.

Posted by McBush on 07/25/08 at 4:33PM

Let's not forget about the $$$ that would be saved by keeping it out of the jails, prisons and courts. Tax it and our state budget problems will be over!

Posted by trubabygirl on 07/25/08 at 4:37PM

    Annonymous tip or competitor?

Posted by teznet on 07/25/08 at 4:53PM

Now you have to wait for the cop who is in charge of the evidence to sell it.

Posted by RUChimpy on 07/25/08 at 6:06PM

The terrorist connection is crap-the weed is domestic, probably the only thing that we produce better than anybody in the world. (Made in the USA-baby) Perhaps, we should be selling it to the terrorist. Maybe if they would light up, then lighten up. Jevhovah/Allah/God put it here, who are we to question it. Slavery wasn't illegal, or discrimination by race, gender, etc-didn't mean it was right. Some folks are ahead of their time. Remember, grow your own, and keep it to yourself.

    Posted by Led40 on 07/25/08 at 6:10PM

The drug trade supports terrorism and is illegal.

Well the oil trade supports terrorism more than the marijuana smugglers, but thats legal, and actually supported by Wall Street. Country's oil habit is whats killing it, not the marijuana habit.

For what its worth citizens, theres actually hemp fibers in the paper of the US Constitution. Anyone pro or con on this issue want to burn that, either to smoke it or stamp it out? Didn't think so....

Posted by RUChimpy on 07/25/08 at 6:32PM

I think all of you who lump all drugs and terrorism need to be a little more specific- heroin, and perhaps coke which are not produced domestically are connected, but again weed grown in the US is not supporting terrorist. And if any of you are smoking imports -shame on you.

Posted by msmoore on 07/25/08 at 8:08PM

I suspect that it is a basic for prescription drugs. We are a very stupid nation if we do not use such a valuable commodity. If we are burning mary jane, our economy is going up in smoke, also.

    Posted by futurecop55 on 07/25/08 at 9:20PM

waste of time...the cops have to much time on the donut slain hands...lol

Posted by glsmarlton on 07/25/08 at 9:38PM

What's the big deal. Pot is an all natural herb with no chemicals to destroy your body. It is a medicinal herb for cancer patients--and people with movement disorders. legalize it.

I guess the govt cant tax it and thats why they keep it illegal.

i agree with maryjane 715. i knew alot of cops and professionals who smoke pot - does that make them a junkie? i don't think so.

time for the 21st century to grow up.

Posted by njbroski on 07/26/08 at 12:21AM

and all that prime weed will go directly to NJ's finest...

seriously, smoking weed with a few friends and just chilling at home...or getting tanked and driving around?

go find some pedophiles and murderers for gods sake.
